Introduction - What Is Chain Link Fence?

Chain link fence (also known as wire mesh fence, diamond mesh fence, or cyclone fence) is a woven steel fencing system made from interlocking wires formed into a diamond pattern. It is one of the most widely used fencing types in the world because of its strength, transparency, low cost, and low maintenance.

The fence fabric is manufactured by feeding galvanized or PVC-coated steel wire through specialized weaving machines that create continuous diamond-shaped openings. The edges are knuckled or barbed depending on security requirements. The fabric is stretched between line posts (typically steel pipes) and secured with tension bars, tension wire, and tie wires. Top rails and bottom tension wires add rigidity.

Chain link fencing is available in a range of wire diameters (gauges), mesh openings, heights, and finishes, making it suitable for everything from residential pet enclosures to prison perimeters.

· Selvage: Knuckled at both ends (safe) or barbed at one end (security)

· Top and bottom edges: Reinforced with knuckled or twisted finish

Key Advantages – Deep Dive

1. Unbeatable Cost Efficiency

Chain link fencing consistently offers the lowest installed cost per linear meter of any permanent fence. For large projects – farms, industrial parks, school perimeters – the savings can be substantial compared to wrought iron, vinyl, or wood. Yet cost savings do not mean sacrifice: properly galvanized chain link lasts 20–30 years.

2. Visual Transparency for Safety & Sports

Because chain link does not block vision, it is the top choice for sports courts (tennis, baseball, soccer), where players and spectators need to see through the fence. For security applications, clear sightlines allow guards and cameras to monitor both sides of the perimeter.

3. Low Maintenance, High Durability

Hot-dip galvanizing bonds zinc to steel, preventing rust even after scratches. PVC coating adds extra protection and color. Unlike wood, chain link never rots, warps, or needs painting. A simple hose-down once a year keeps it looking good.

4. Easy Repair & Modification

If a section is damaged by vehicle impact or falling trees, you simply cut out the damaged fabric and weave in a new piece with splice bars. Posts can be replaced individually. No need to tear down entire sections.

5. Adaptable to Any Terrain

Chain link fence follows ground contours easily. On slopes, the fabric can be “racked” (angled along the slope) or stepped. Posts can be set at different depths to maintain top alignment.

6. Privacy & Wind Control Options

When privacy is desired, privacy slats (vinyl or aluminum) weave vertically into the mesh, blocking up to 95% of visibility while allowing some wind passage. Alternatively, windscreen fabric can be attached to reduce wind load and create a solid visual barrier.

Applications – Where Chain Link Fence Excels

Sector Typical Use Key Benefit

Sports & Recreation Tennis courts, baseball backstops, soccer fields, golf ranges Clear visibility, impact resistance

Residential Backyard boundaries, dog kennels, pool enclosures, vegetable gardens Affordable, pet-safe, low maintenance

Agriculture & Farms Livestock containment, crop protection, poultry yards Strong, flexible, easy to install

Industrial & Commercial Factory perimeters, warehouse yards, construction sites Durable, cost-effective, security-ready

Government & Public Schools, playgrounds, parks, public housing Safe edges, low vandalism appeal

High Security Prisons, airports, military bases, data centers (with toppings) Can integrate razor wire & detection

Temporary Sites Events, disaster recovery, road works (with portable bases) Fast deployment, reusable

Installation Overview

Step-by-Step (Standard Tension System)

1. Layout & Post Setting – Mark post positions (2.5m–3.0m spacing). Dig holes (300mm diameter, depth = post height/3 + 300mm). Set terminal posts (corner, end, gate) first, pour concrete. After curing, set line posts with a string line for alignment.

2. Install Tension Bands & Caps – Attach tension bands to terminal posts (top, middle, bottom). Fit post caps.

3. Unroll Chain Link Fabric – Roll out the fabric along the fence line. Position so the selvage (knuckled edge) is at top and bottom.

4. Tension Fabric – Hook the fabric onto the terminal post using a tension bar inserted into the end diamond. Attach bar to tension bands with bolts. Use a fence puller (come-along) to stretch fabric tight to the next terminal post. Insert tension bar at that end and secure.

5. Attach to Line Posts – Use tie wires or pre-formed clips to fasten the fabric to each line post every 300mm–400mm.

6. Top Rail & Bottom Wire (optional) – Slide top rail through the top selvage, connect to rail ends on terminal posts. Add bottom tension wire if required.

7. Gates & Accessories – Install gate frames, hinges, latches. Add barbed wire arms if needed.

Pro Tip: For DIY small areas (backyard dog run), pre-assembled chain link panels with frames are easier than tensioned rolls.

Maintenance Guidelines

Frequency Action

Annually Inspect for loose tie wires, damaged fabric, leaning posts. Trim vegetation touching the fence.

As needed Rinse off dirt, bird droppings, or salt (coastal areas) with garden hose.

Every 5 years Check galvanized coating for deep scratches. Touch up with cold-galvanizing spray.

After storms Inspect for fallen branches or impact damage. Repair small holes with splice bars.

Note: PVC coated fences may show fading after 10+ years (normal UV degradation). This does not affect structural integrity.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What’s the difference between galvanized and PVC coated chain link?

A: Galvanized chain link has a zinc coating that prevents rust – it’s silver/grey in color. PVC coated chain link adds a layer of colored plastic (green, black, brown) over the galvanized wire, offering extra corrosion protection and aesthetics. PVC costs more but looks better and lasts longer in coastal or high-rain areas.

Q2: Which gauge should I choose?

A: 12 gauge (2.5mm) is standard for residential and sports. 11 gauge (3.0mm) for heavier duty like industrial or large animal containment. 9 gauge (3.8mm) for high security (prisons, airports). 14 gauge (2.0mm) for temporary or light decorative use.

Q3: Can chain link fence stop dogs from digging under?

A: For diggers, bury the bottom edge 150mm–300mm underground, or lay concrete footing below grade, or attach a curved “dig barrier” at the base. Standard installation leaves a small gap – you can also run a bottom tension wire close to ground.

Q4: How long does chain link fence last?

A: Hot-dip galvanized (45µm+) lasts 20–30 years in most inland environments. PVC coated adds 5–10 more years. In coastal salt air, expect 15–20 years without coating, 25+ with PVC.

Q5: Can I install chain link fence myself?

A: Yes, for small areas (under 50 meters). Home improvement stores sell DIY kits. For large perimeters or slopes, professional installation is recommended because proper tensioning requires experience and specialized tools (fence puller).

Q6: What’s the standard mesh opening?

A: 50mm (2 inches) diamond is most common. 60mm (2.5") offers less material (lighter, cheaper). 45mm (1.75") provides better anti-climb for security. 25mm (1") for small animal exclusion (rabbits, chickens).

Q7: Do you offer privacy slats?

A: Yes. Vinyl or aluminum slats in various colors (black, green, white, brown) weave vertically through the mesh. They reduce visibility by 85–95% and also block wind.
