What Is BRC Fence?

BRC fence, also known as roll top welded mesh fencing, is a premium steel perimeter system recognized for its distinctive rolled top and bottom edges. The name originates from British Reinforced Concrete standards, but today it refers to a specific type of electro-welded mesh panel with triangular or cylindrical roll-formed ends.

Unlike traditional flat mesh panels, the roll top design eliminates sharp edges – improving safety for children, athletes, and maintenance staff – while significantly increasing the panel’s structural rigidity. The rolled edges act as built-in stiffeners, allowing the fence to withstand higher impact loads without permanent deformation.

Manufactured from high-tensile steel wire (typically 4.0mm–5.0mm), welded at every intersection by advanced resistance welding machines, BRC fencing offers exceptional strength and consistency. The entire panel is then hot-dip galvanized (BS EN 1461, minimum 85µm zinc coating) and optionally powder coated in any RAL color, providing 25+ years of corrosion protection even in harsh environments.

Key Advantages – Deep Dive

1. Safety Without Compromise

The rolled top and bottom edges are the defining feature of BRC fencing. Unlike standard welded mesh panels that leave sharp wire ends or cut edges, the BRC roll top completely encloses the wire tips. This makes it the preferred choice for schools, kindergartens, playgrounds, and sports facilities where injury prevention is critical. Maintenance workers also benefit – no cuts when handling or moving panels.

2. Superior Structural Rigidity

A flat welded mesh panel can bend or bow under pressure. The triangular roll top acts as a continuous stiffener along the top and bottom edges, dramatically increasing the panel’s moment of inertia. In impact tests, BRC panels withstand up to 650 Joules – roughly equivalent to a car hitting at 15 km/h – without permanent deformation. This means your perimeter stays straight and professional-looking for decades.

3. Long-Term Corrosion Protection

We apply hot-dip galvanizing (immersion in molten zinc at 450°C) to every BRC panel after welding. This creates a metallurgical bond between zinc and steel, with a typical coating thickness of 85–120µm. For sites near the ocean or in industrial areas with acid rain, we recommend an additional polyester powder coating (60–80µm) in your choice of RAL color. The duplex system (zinc + paint) can extend service life beyond 30 years.

4. Anti-Climb & Anti-Cut Performance

The combination of tight mesh openings (50x100mm) and a smooth surface without horizontal or diagonal members makes BRC fencing extremely difficult to climb. No foot or hand holds exist. For high-security applications, we offer 5.0mm wire diameter and 25x100mm mesh, which resists bolt cutters and small cutting tools. The welded intersections are stronger than the wire itself – cutting one wire still leaves an intact grid.

5. Cost-Effective Lifecycle

While the initial cost of BRC fencing is slightly higher than basic chain link or single-wire mesh, the total cost of ownership over 25 years is significantly lower. You save on:

· No repainting (galvanized finish)

· No panel replacements (impact-resistant)

· No injury liability (safe roll edges)

· No frequent maintenance

Installation Overview

Step-by-Step (Post-Mounted System)

1. Site Preparation – Clear vegetation, mark post positions at panel width intervals (usually 2.0m or 2.5m centers).

2. Post Setting – Excavate holes (300mm diameter, depth = 1/3 of post height + 300mm for frost line). Place RHS posts, fill with C25 concrete, and allow to cure (24–48 hours).

3. Panel Attachment – Attach BRC panels to posts using stainless steel clamp bars and anti-tamper bolts. Ensure top edge is level (use a laser or string line).

4. Toppings (optional) – Install cranked arms, barbed wire, or razor wire brackets using pre-drilled holes.

5. Gates – Install matching swing or sliding gates with security hinges and locks.

Tool-free connection option: For rental or temporary installations, we offer quick-pin couplers that require no tools.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the difference between BRC fence and standard welded mesh fence?

A: The primary difference is the roll top & roll bottom – triangular rolled edges that eliminate sharp points and increase rigidity. Standard welded mesh fences have cut wire ends that can be sharp and are flat without the stiffening effect.

Q2: Can BRC fence be installed on sloping ground?

A: Yes. You can step the panels (each panel follows the slope with a small step) or use custom-angled panels. We provide installation drawings for both methods.

Q3: What coatings do you offer?

A: Standard: Hot-dip galvanized (85µm min., BS EN 1461). Upgrade: Galvanized + polyester powder coating (any RAL color). For extreme corrosion: Galfan (Zn-5%Al) coating.

Q4: Is BRC fence suitable for high-security prisons?

A: Yes, when combined with anti-climb toppings (razor wire or anti-climb brackets) and heavier wire diameters (5.0mm). Our panels can be tested to LPS 1175 or other standards upon request.

Q5: How long does BRC fence last?

A: Hot-dip galvanized panels last 20–25 years in typical environments. With additional powder coating, service life can exceed 30 years.

Q6: Can I get a custom mesh size or panel height?

A: Absolutely. We produce custom tooling for non-standard heights, mesh openings, and wire diameters. Minimum order quantity applies for full customization.

Q7: Do you offer samples?

A: Yes. We can provide a 300mm x 300mm sample panel with your chosen finish and mesh. Contact us for sample fees and shipping.
